Viola Assistant Principal and Section

Auditions - Viola Assistant Principal (1-year*) & Section (2 positions, 1 Permanent and one 1-year)
Audition Date: Wednesday, August 25, 2010 (daytime)

Application Deadline: 5:00 PM, TUESDAY, August 3, 2010
All forms must be received by this time. Late applications may be accepted if space is available.

  • J.S. Bach: Any movement of a Solo Suite
  • Concerto: First mvt. of a Concerto by Bartok, Hindemith, Stamitz, or Walton
  • Beethoven: Symphony No. 5, 2nd mvt. m. 1-10; 49-59; 98-106
  • Brahms, Symphony No. 2, 1st movement, Reh. C to D and E to F
  • Mahler: Symphony No. 2 **
  • Mendelssohn: Scherzo from "Midsummer Night's Dream" Beginning – D
  • Mozart: Ov. to Marriage of Figaro beginning - m.24
  • Mozart: Symphony No. 40 (1st mvt. m.115-138)
  • Shostakovich: Sym. No. 5, 1st mvt. Reh #15 - #17 **
  • R. Strauss: Don Juan; beginning - letter B (m. 40)

For Assistant Principal, add the following repertoire to the above list

* If a current member of the NHSO is awarded the Assistant Principal position, then a 1-year section position may also be awarded. In case the winner of the permanent section position is awarded the Assistant Principal position for one-year, then a 1-year section position will also be awarded. There are a total of 3 openings in the viola section.

 

Possible sight reading from standard orchestral excerpts. Preliminary auditions will be held behind a screen. Final auditions will be held immediately after the preliminary auditions and do not use a screen. The NHSO does not provide any travel expense reimbursement for any audition round. The NHSO reserves the right not to invite an applicant to the audition they have applied for.

 

A refundable $30.00 deposit is required in order to secure an audition time. Send your Audition Application Form; check made payable to the NHSO; and your resume to: NHSO, P.O. Box 9718, New Haven, CT 06536. Your check will be returned to you at the audition. Cancellations must be received at the symphony office by noon on the day prior to the audition in order to be refundable. If you do not notify us that you will not be attending then you will forfeit your deposit. This system is designed to minimize no-shows.  Music may be obtained from your local music dealer or by calling either Kalmus Music Co. at 800-434-6340 or Luck's Music at 800-348-8749. Both accept major credit cards and offer several shipping options.

 

Contract Requirements

In addition to its seven Symphony Series concerts, the NHSO produces three Pops series, one Young People's Concerts, outdoor concerts in the summer, and other special concerts. Rehearsals are usually held on Sunday and weekday evenings, averaging three rehearsals per Symphony Series. Concerts are usually on Thursday nights with a repeat on the weekend.

Contracted members are required to attend three of the seven sets of rehearsals and concerts for the Symphony Series (35 services) with the possibility of missing up to four series per season. Approximately thirty additional services may be offered based on availability, seniority, and required instrumentation. The contract is flexible concerning attendance for these additional services. The pay during the 2009-2010 season for section players was $99.00 per service. In addition there is a travel pay allowance for players living more than 15 miles from New Haven (maximum of $25 per day). The collective bargaining agreement is currently under negotiation.
