* If needed, this excerpt will be provided on request.
Possible sight reading from standard orchestral excerpts. Substitute auditions are not held behind a screen. The NHSO does not provide any travel expense reimbursement for any audition round. The NHSO reserves the right not to invite an applicant to the audition they have applied for.
A refundable $30.00 deposit is required in order to secure an audition time. Send your Audition Application Form; check made payable to the NHSO; and your resume to: NHSO, P.O. Box 9718, New Haven, CT 06536. Your check will be returned to you at the audition. Cancellations must be received at the symphony office by noon on the business day prior to the audition in order to be refundable. If you do not notify us that you will not be attending then you will forfeit your deposit. This system is designed to minimize no-shows. Music may be obtained from your local music dealer or by calling either Kalmus Music Co. at 800-434-6340 or Luck's Music at 800-348-8749. Both accept major credit cards and offer several shipping options.
Substitute Positions
If you are added to the current list of substitute players, you may be offered work as needed at current negotiated rates. The current pay for the 2010-2011 season for section players is $99.00 per service. In addition there is a travel pay allowance for players living more than 15 miles from New Haven (maximum of $25 per day). The collective bargaining agreement is currently under negotiation. In order to perform with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra you need to belong to a local chapter of the musicians union (A. F. of M.). If you are offered more than 8 services within a year you must join local 400, even if you are a member of another local.
