Shifting Patterns: Project Goals and Residency Plan

Goals:

Under the direction of internationally renowned NHSO Music Director William Boughton, Shifting Patterns will address the following goals:

  • Introduce over 6,000 students and 1,000 adults to a variety of chamber and orchestral music, the fundamentals of music composition, and traditional Asian instruments including:
    • Komungo (4th century Korean fretted board instrument)
    • An exquisite collection of bells from around the world
    • Korean percussion:  drums, cymbals, rattles, chimes, and meditation bowls
  • Inspire students through creative adaptations of the school curriculum.
  • Provide students and community partners with opportunities to perform and experience new music, express themselves in music composition, and develop personal relationships with resident composers and NHSO musicians.
  • Promote cultural understanding through involvement in the arts.
  • Build and strengthen relationships between the NHSO and project partners.

Residency plan:

Shifting Patterns will engage the NHSO board of directors, staff, musicians, and community partners in attaining these goals, and broaden our reach throughout greater New Haven and beyond.  The strength of Shifting Patterns is two fold:

  1. The ability to positively impact individuals of all ages and levels of musical experience in a personal manner; and
  2. The power to propel all participants to an elevated level of community involvement, regional and national relevance, and encourage participants to take risks in future endeavors.

All NHSO education programs are comprehensively evaluated using child, parent, and administrator evaluation forms. These materials have been developed over the last five years to assess all parameters of our programming. The results of our evaluation, both quantitative and subjective, will be posted on our website throughout the course of the project.
