The Audition committee will review all resumes and then invite selected applicants to audition.

Principal Flute Audition Repertoire 2013

  • Solo: Mozart: Concerto of choice, 1st movement
  • Beethoven: Leonore Ov. No. 3
  • Brahms: Symphony No. 4, movement 4 only
  • Debussy - Afternoon of a Faun
  • Mendelssohn - Scherzo from Midsummer Night's Dream
  • Prokofiev: Classical Symphony, 2nd movement, letter B to C, 4th movement, beginning to letter D
  • Prokofiev: Peter and the Wolf *
  • Ravel: Daphnis and Chloe, Suite No. 2 *
  • Saint-Saëns: Carnival of the Animals, movement 10 only (Voliere)
  • Stravinsky: Firebird Suite, Variation de L'oiseux de feu (rehearsal #9 to 5 bars after reh. #18) *

*  These excerpts will be provided to those invited to audition.

All parts are first flute parts. There may be possible sight reading from standard orchestral excerpts. Only invited candidates will need to complete an audition application form and return it along with a $50 refundable deposit. Do not send in an application form or deposit check until you have received an invitation.

Contract Information

In addition to its Symphony Series concerts, the NHSO produces a Pops series, a Young People's Series, outdoor concerts in the summer, and other special concerts. Rehearsals are usually held on Sunday and weekday evenings, averaging three rehearsals per Symphony Series. Concerts are usually on Thursday nights with some repeat performances on Sunday afternoon. The pay for principal players will be $139.05 per service. In addition there is a travel pay allowance for players living more than 15 miles from New Haven (maximum of $25 per day). Finalists from these auditions may also be added to the substitute list.
