NHSO and Education The New Haven Symphony Orchestra is for YOU!

NHSO Komungo Master-in-Residence Jin Hi Kim has developed a highly successful Music Meditation Workshop for corporations, hospitals, health centers, and schools. During the workshop, participants enjoy a series of Music Meditation and Korean Drumming exercises directed by Ms. Kim.

Asian percussion instruments such as singing bowls, finger cymbals, temple block, harmonium and clappers have a historic role in various Asian meditation practices. This workshop combines meditation and music improvisation with a group chant experience and a creative music ensemble performance. Participants will also relax to Korean music as Ms. Kim demonstrates ancient Korean meditative music with her 4th century komungo.

The komungo is a string instrument indigenous to Korea, originating in the fourth century. The six-stringed, fretted board zither was traditionally performed by male Confucian scholars for their meditation. Korean traditional music is often rooted in Buddhist meditation. Jin Hi Kim’s komungo solo performances are imbued with meditative and vivid energy that makes it mesmerizing.

Ms. Kim directs Music Meditation to participated clients and staff at institutions who are looking to explore the benefits that meditation and relaxation can bring. A concert is held at the end of the week's long workshop.

TESTIMONALS

"It calmed me down and cleared my mind." -a 6th grade student at St. Martin de Porres

"It healed my mind." -a client at CT Mental Health Center

“I truly enjoyed the combination of meditation and music. What I love the most about this wonderful experience is the feeling of peace, when you hear the sound of the singing bowls. Jin Hi you are a wonderful instructor. Thank you for sharing your talent with us.” -Diana

“I also felt the music and meditation series was worthwhile. At first I was a bit skeptical and afraid to sing (I am not a singer), but Jin Hi made it easy to try. I did feel more relaxed and the great energy that was created by the group stayed with me for some time after. I enjoyed the experience and loved the singing bowls and Jin Hi’s demonstrations of the traditional Korean instruments.” -Evelyn
