NHSO Section Violin (6 Positions)

Violin Section Audition Repertoire 2016

  • Solo: Any movement of a Bach unaccompanied solo
  • Concerto: First movement of a Mozart Violin Concerto (either No. 3, 4, or 5) (no cadenza)
  • Beethoven: Symphony No. 3, 3rd mvt., beginning to letter B (m.119)
  • Berlioz: Symphony fantastique, 1st mvt. m. 17-24 (letter B-C), 2nd mvt. m. 255-302 (Letter T-W)
  • Brahms: Symphony No. 1, 1st mvt. (m.1-m.9 only)
  • Brahms: Variations on a Theme of Haydn – Var. 5
  • Mozart: Overture to “The Marriage of Figaro” – Beginning to letter A (m.58)
  • Mozart: Symphony No. 40, 1st movement, after double bar to letter C (m. 103 – m. 134)
  • Schumann: Symphony No. 2, Scherzo mvt. (1st page, including repeat)
  • R. Strauss: Don Juan, beginning to letter B

Orchestral excerpts are all from first violin parts. Seating is in either first or second violin sections as determined by the Music Director and Audition Committee after the auditions are completed. Possible sight reading from standard orchestral excerpts. Preliminary round auditions are held behind a screen. Final auditions will be held immediately after the preliminary auditions and do not use a screen. The NHSO does not provide any travel expense reimbursement for any audition round.

A refundable $30.00 deposit is required in order to secure an audition time. Send your Audition Application Form, check made payable to the NHSO, and your resume to: NHSO Auditions, 545 Long Wharf Drive, 6th Floor, New Haven, CT 06511. Your check will be returned to you at the audition. Cancellations must be received at the symphony office by noon two days prior to the audition in order to be refundable. If you do not notify us that you will not be attending then you will forfeit your deposit. This system is designed to minimize no-shows. Contract Information
In addition to its Symphony Series concerts, the NHSO produces a Pops series, a Young People’s Series, outdoor concerts in the summer, and other special concerts. Rehearsals are usually held on weekday evenings, averaging three or four rehearsals per Symphony Series. Concerts are usually on Thursday nights with some repeat performances on the following weekend. The pay for section players is $109.00 per service. The guaranteed services will be 35 services per season, although more services may be offered. Players must play at least 50% of the subscription series offered per season to keep their contract. In addition there is a travel pay allowance for players living more than 15 miles from New Haven (maximum of $30 per day). The substitute list may be updated with results from this audition. Current violin substitutes are encouraged to audition. In order to perform with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra you need to belong to your local of the musicians union (A. F. of M.). If you are offered more than 6 services within a year you must join local 400, even if you are a member of another local.
