Auditions - Section Violin (4 openings)

Audition Date: Saturday, September 8, 2007 (daytime)

Application Deadline: 5:00 PM, Friday, August 24, 2007 All forms must be received by this time. Late applications accepted only if space is available.

Audition Repertoire 2007:

  • Solo: Any fast movement of a Bach unaccompanied solo
  • Concerto: First movement of a Mozart Violin Concerto (either No. 3, 4, or 5)
  • Beethoven: Symphony No. 3, 3rd mvt., beginning to letter B (m.119)
  • Brahms: Symphony No. 1, 1st mvt. (m.1-m.9 only)
  • Brahms: Variations on a Theme of Haydn – Var. 5
  • Handel: Concerto Grosso Op 6, No 5. - 1st Mvt. Violin I Solo Concertante part
  • Mozart: Overture to "The Marriage of Figaro" - Beginning to letter A (m.58)
  • Mozart: Symphony No. 40, 1st movement, after double bar to letter C (m. 103 - m. 134)
  • Schumann: Symphony No. 2, Scherzo mvt. (1st page, including repeat)
  • R. Strauss: Don Juan, beginning to letter B
  • Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5, 3rd mvmt. (Valse)

    Orchestral excerpts are all from first violin parts. Seating is in either first or second violin sections as determined by the Music Director and Audition Committee after the auditions are completed.

Preliminary auditions will be held behind a screen. Final auditions if needed may not use a screen. The NHSO does not provide any travel expense reimbursement for any audition round. The NHSO reserves the right not to invite an applicant to the audition they have applied for.

A refundable $30.00 deposit is required in order to secure an audition time. Send your Audition Application Form, check made payable to the NHSO and your resume to: NHSO, P.O. Box 9718, New Haven, CT 06536. Your check will be returned to you at the audition. Cancellations must be received at the symphony office by noon on the business day prior to the audition in order to be refundable. If you do not notify us that you will not be attending then you will forfeit your deposit. This system is designed to minimize no-shows.

Music may be obtained from your local music dealer or by calling either Kalmus Music Co. at 800-434-6340 or Luck's Music at 800-348-8749. Both accept major credit cards and offer several shipping options.

Contract Requirements
In addition to its seven Symphony Series concerts, the NHSO produces three Pops series, one Young People's Concerts, outdoor concerts in June and July, and other special concerts. Rehearsals are usually held on Sunday and weekday evenings, averaging four rehearsals per Symphony Series. Concerts are usually on Thursday nights. Contracted members are required to attend four of the seven sets of rehearsals and concerts for the Symphony Series (35 services) with the possibility of missing up to three series per season. Approximately eighteen additional services may be offered based on availability, seniority, and required instrumentation. The contract is flexible concerning attendance for these additional services. The per service rate of pay for the 2007-2008 season for section players is $95.00 per service. In addition there is a travel pay allowance for players living more than 15 miles from New Haven (maximum of $20 per day).
